Two officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been arrested for allegedly killing their colleagues over valuables and assets seized from an arrested suspect.
The commission said in a statement on Tuesday that the arrested workers are located in the zone in Sokoto. The said officers, Assistant Commissioner Apata Oluwaseun Odunayo and Inspector Ogbuji Titu Tochukwu, allegedly conspired and inflicted serious injuries on their colleague, Inspector Abel Isah Dickson, who later died in hospital on May 7. EFCC Director General Abdulrasheed Bawa confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday. He revealed that two charges of murder have been filed against the duo.
The late officer was buried on Saturday, May 13, 2023 in Jos, Plateau State.
Bawa said, “Useri died on May 7, 2023 at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, where he was treated for injuries sustained two days earlier in a fight with two other operatives: Apata Oluwaseun Odunayo, EFCC Deputy Director and EFCC -inspector Ogbuji Titu Tochukwu.
“They had a difference of opinion regarding the custody of the property of the arrested suspect which led to a fight which the commission is failing to do.
"The commission arrested two police officers with whom it had differences and handed them over to the Nigerian Police for further investigation and possible prosecution."
Bawa noted that the latest information was that they were charged at the Sokoto Gwiwa Chief Court with two counts of criminal conspiracy and murder. He explained that both offenses are punishable under Sections 60 and 191 of the Penal Code of Sokoto State, 2019.
Bawa added that they also face further disciplinary action under the commission's staff rules, without prejudice to the police investigation.
