The University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University are among the best universities in the world according to the World University Ranking. According to the list published on the website of the global organization on Monday, a total of 20,531 universities were ranked, of which 2,000 made it to the global list.
The University of Ibadan was the first in Nigeria and 1163 out of 2000 worldwide. UNN was ranked second in Nigeria and ranked 178 worldwide. UNILAG was ranked third in Nigeria and 1875 globally, while ABU was ranked fourth nationally and 1881 globally. The top five universities in the world according to the ranking are; Harvard University, USA; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States of America; Stanford University, USA; Cambridge University in Great Britain and Oxford University in Great Britain. So the rankings were based on research, employment, faculty and education. Commenting on the national picture, Dr Nadin Mahassen, president of the World University Rankings Centre, said: "While it is encouraging to see Nigeria's rise in the rankings, funding for the development and reputation of Nigeria's higher education system is critical for the country to be more globally competitive. Efforts must be made to ensure that Nigeria attracts the best researchers and students. , that enrollments in colleges grow in parallel with growth in teaching ability and the share of expenditures on higher education in the GDP of the country will increase continuously in the coming years.
