The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18 election in Ogun State, Honorable Ladi Adebutu, has cried foul over the alleged threat to his life.
Adebutu, who spoke exclusively to the Tribune from outside the country in exile from Friday to Saturday, said the warning became necessary following the removal of staff from the Department of State Services (DSS) to which he was attached. It would be recalled that in the last governorship election, Adebutu polled 262,383 votes for Governor Dapo Abiodun who polled 276,298 votes and declared winner of the poll. However, the PDP candidate later filed a petition for governorship election in the state challenging the declaration of Abiodun as the winner of the election. According to him, after he went to court to challenge the conduct of an election he believed he had won, a mixture of persuasion and subtle threats was used to force him to withdraw his statement. He said the withdrawal of his security detail, especially the DSS personnel, and the significant downsizing of the police force attached to him put him at risk.
Specifically, he said he had reliable intelligence that he was being tried to be taken out or taken out of traffic in an undercover kidnapping.
"God will not allow their evil plans against us to come true. That is why I have decided to go into exile for my own safety," he said.
