Principal Justifications for Boni's Doctor of Science Degree from Modibbo Adama University



Mr. Chancellor, Sir, I am pleased and proud to present to you His Excellency, Mr. Boni Haruna. A patient leader with impeccable character, a proven reputation for integrity, transparent honesty and directness. A man of extraordinary vitality, courage, great administrative ability and, above all, a dedicated servant of the community and the country. Born on 12 June 1957 in Kuburshosho, Michika Local Government, Adamawa State. Boni Haruna attended Kuburshosho Primary School in 1971 and Numan Primary School in 1976. He also attended the defunct Yola College of Advance Studies in 1978 from where he went on to study Political Science at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria until 198 . Mr. Boni Haruna served in the Office of the Military Governor of the Compulsory National Youth Service System in Sokoto State during the year of service 198 /85. In 1 , he studied Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the University of Jos. Boni Haruna also had the privilege of studying at the famous Nigerian Institute of Journalism in Lagos in 199 , which led him to prepare for a career in journalism. Working in the private sector, he joined Sub-Saharan Press Limited, which published the now defunct THEWEEK magazine. Utislehti and became the vice president of the organization. Boni Haruna worked in both the public and private sectors. In the public sector, he rose to become Assistant General Secretary, Jalingo State College of Education, Taraba State. After graduating in 1982, he became a youth leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the former Gongolo state (now Adamawa and Taraba states). During that period, he served as a close aide to the then UPN governorship candidate, the late Reverend Wilson Sabiya.
In 1992, Boni Haruna became the Sole Personal Assistant (equivalent to the Chief of Staff) to Reverend Jolly Nyame, the first civilian governor of Taraba State. Boni Haruna probably cut his teeth in leadership and administration serving as the governor's most trusted aide in Taraba. It was therefore not surprising that in 1999, Boni Haruna was elected as the Deputy Governor of his home state, Adamawa, on the same ticket as Governor, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar.
As fate would have it, Mr. Boni Haruna was later sworn in as governor in Taraba State alongside his former boss. He was re-elected to that position in 2003. Being the speedster that he is, Boni became Haruna (the first elected governor) who served two terms in Adamawa State for a total of 8 years. Barely seven years after leaving the governorship, the high-profile personality of Boni Haruna could not be overshadowed.
In 2014, he was appointed to the Federal Executive Committee as Honorary Minister of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. As governor, he made important decisions and achieved milestones in various areas of public life. In the field of education, which he considered his priority number 1, 2 and 3. He established the Adamawa State University in the face of strong opposition to the decision. He became the first visitor to the first state university in North East Nigeria. During Boni Haruna's tenure as governor, Adamawa State was the best performing state in Nigeria in Universal Basic Education (UBE) projects. Boni Haruna reinstated or brought back the boarding school to the full-entry secondary school system after about 20 years of cessation policy. He completed all the projects inherited from previous governments, some of which started more than 20 years before he took over in 1999.
